Análisis morfométrico del paladar duro evaluado mediante tomografía computarizada de haz cónico de pacientes que acudieron al Centro Dental Docente de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima - Perú 2023

Abstract

El conocimiento de la morfometría palatina, como el índice palatino y el índice de altura palatina, ha demostrado ser útil en diferentes áreas, permitiendo la identificación racial y sexual a partir de estructuras craneofaciales. Actualmente, la tomografía computarizada de haz cónico se considera una herramienta precisa y confiable para evaluar dichas estructuras. Objetivo: El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo establecer la morfometría del paladar duro evaluada mediante la tomografía computarizada de haz cónico en pacientes que asistieron al Centro Dental Docente de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, durante el año 2023. Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de tipo observacional, descriptivo, transversal y retrospectivo. Se observaron tomografías computarizadas de haz cónico, obteniendo así un total de 146 volúmenes, en los que se analizó y midió la longitud, anchura y altura palatina; y se obtuvo el índice palatino e índice de altura palatina. Resultados: La longitud palatina fue mayor en el sexo masculino con 55.71mm, mientras que el sexo femenino fue de 51.63 mm, en cuanto al grupo etario no hubo diferencia significativa. La anchura palatina según el sexo y grupo etario no se encontró diferencia significativa. La altura palatina fue mayor en sexo masculino con 14.60 mm que el sexo femenino con un 12.48 mm, en cuanto al grupo etario no hubo diferencia significativa. La mayoría de los paladares según el índice palatino eran leptostafilino (70.5%), seguidos por braquistafilino (16.4%) y mesostafilino (13%); y según el índice de altura palatino eran ortostafilinos (60.3%), seguidos por chamestafilino (21.9%) e hipsistafilino (17.8%). Conclusión: El índice palatino de tipo leptostafilino fue mayor en ambos sexos y grupo etarios. El índice de altura palatina de tipo ortostafilino fue mayor en ambos sexos y grupo etarios.

Knowledge of palatal morphometry, such as the palatal index and palatal height index, has proven to be useful in various fields, enabling racial and sexual identification based on craniofacial structures. Currently, cone-beam computed tomography is considered a precise and reliable tool for evaluating these structures. Objective: The aim of the present study was to establish the morphometry of the hard palate evaluated through cone beam computed tomography in patients attending the Dental Teaching Center of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia during the year 2023. Material and Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective study was conducted. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were analyzed, yielding a total of 146 volumes. The length, width, and height of the palate were measured, and the palatal index and palatal height index were obtained. Results: The palatal length was greater in males at 55.71 mm, while in females it was 51.63 mm. No significant difference was found between age groups. The palatal width showed no significant difference according to sex or age group. The palatal height was greater in males at 14.60 mm compared to females at 12.48 mm. No significant difference was found between age groups. According to the palatal index, most palates were leptostaphyline (70.5%), followed by brachystaphyline (16.4%) and mesostaphyline (13%); and according to the palatal height index, most were orthostaphyline (60.3%), followed by chamestaphyline (21.9%) and hypsistaphyline (17.8%). Conclusion: The leptostaphyline palatal index was higher in both sexes and age groups. The orthostaphyline palatal height index was higher in both sexes and age groups.
