Acceso a la canasta básica familiar y uso de implementos de higiene oral en pacientes que acuden al Centro Dental Docente de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, 2024

Abstract

Introducción: La salud bucal constituye un componente fundamental en el bienestar integral, sin embargo, persisten brechas significativas en su implementación y acceso. La canasta básica familiar adquiere relevancia para analizar las barreras estructurales que influyen en el acceso y uso de implementos de higiene oral. No obstante, el acceso y uso habitual de estos implementos no es equitativo.Objetivo: Evaluar la asociación entre el acceso a la canasta básica familiar y el uso de implementos de higiene oral en pacientes del Centro Dental Docente de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima – Perú, 2024Materiales y Métodos: Diseño transversal, retrospectivo, descriptivo y observacional. La población estuvo conformada por todos los registros clínicos de personas de 18 años o más, recopilados dentro de un estudio primario. Las variables principales fueron el acceso a la canasta básica familiar, el uso de implementos de higiene oral y covariables sociodemográficas. Se aplicaron análisis descriptivo, bivariado y multivariado, con Stata Now 19 SE, considerando 95% de confianza y p<0.05.Resultados: En 667 pacientes, el 87.41% tuvo acceso a la canasta básica familiar, asociándose significativamente con mayor uso de implementos de higiene oral. El promedio de implementos fue 3.06±1.09, siendo mayor en quienes tenían acceso a la canasta básica familiar (3.13 vs. 2.54; p<0.001). El uso de pasta dental, pasta fluorada, hilo dental y enjuague bucal mostró asociaciones significativas con el acceso a la canasta básica familiar (p<0.05). En el análisis multivariado, el acceso a la canasta básica familiar se asoció positivamente con el número de implementos utilizados (β=0.281; IC95%: 0.06–0.51; p=0.015).Conclusión: Existe asociación entre el acceso a la canasta básica familiar y el uso de implementos de higiene oral de los pacientes que acudieron al Centro Dental Docente de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia en el 2024.

Introduction: Oral health is a fundamental component of overall well-being, yet significant gaps remain in its implementation and access. The market basket measure is relevant for analyzing the structural barriers that influence access to and use of oral hygiene implements. However, access to and regular use of these implements is not equitable.Objective: To evaluate the association between access to the market basket measure and the use of oral hygiene products in patients at the Dental Teaching Center of the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University, Lima, Peru, 2024.Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive, and observational design. The population consisted of all clinical records of people aged 18 years or older, collected within a primary study. The main variables were access to the market basket measure, use of oral hygiene products, and sociodemographic covariates. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were performed using Stata Now 19 SE, considering a 95% confidence level and p<0.05.Results: Of the 667 patients, 87.41% had access to the market basket measure, which was significantly associated with greater use of oral hygiene products. The average number of products was 3.06±1.09, being higher among those who had access to the market basket measure (3.13 vs. 2.54; p<0.001). The use of toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash showed significant associations with access to the market basket measure (p<0.05). In the multivariate analysis, access to the market basket measure was positively associated with the number of products used (β=0.281; 95% CI: 0.06–0.51; p=0.015).Conclusion: There is an association between access to the market basket measure and the use of oral hygiene implements among patients who attended the Teaching Dental Center of the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University in 2024.
