Asociación entre etnicidad y cepillado dental en niños menores de 12 años de edad en el Perú, 2018

Abstract

Antecedentes: El cepillado dental es uno de los hábitos de higiene bucal más importantes debido a que es altamente efectivo para prevenir la caries desde temprana edad. Sin embargo, existen condiciones culturales de aprobación o rechazo a esta práctica. Objetivo: Determinar si existe asociación entre el cepillado dental y etnicidad de los niños menores de 12 años de edad en el Perú, 2018. Métodos y Materiales: La investigación fue de tipo transversal y se usó como base de datos la información a nivel nacional de la ENDES 2018. La muestra estuvo conformada por 36 874 registros de niños menores de 12 años de edad que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Las variables fueron la etnicidad y cepillado dental, las covariables fueron la región, área de residencia, región natural, lugar de residencia, quintil de riqueza, seguro de salud, sexo y edad. Se utilizó la prueba Chi-cuadrado (IC: 95%), RP y RPa como medidas de asociación. Resultados: Se encontró asociación entre la autoidentificación indígena y la frecuencia de cepillado, RP=0.98 (IC95%: 0.97-0.99). Asimismo, asociación entre la lengua materna nativa y la frecuencia de cepillado, RP=0.97 (IC95%: 0.95-0.98). Sin embargo, al aplicar la RPa con las covariables, no se encontró asociación. Conclusión: No existe asociación entre etnicidad y el cepillado dental de los niños menores de 12 años de edad durante el 2018 en nuestro país.

Background: Tooth brushing is one of the most important oral hygiene habits because it is highly effective in preventing caries from an early age. However, there are cultural conditions of approval or rejection of this practice. Objective: To determine if there is an association between dental brushing and ethnicity of children under 12 years of age in Peru, 2018. Methods and Materials: The research was cross-sectional and the information at the national level of ENDES 2018. The sample consisted of 36,874 records of children under 12 years of age who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Variables were ethnicity and toothbrushing; covariates were region, area of residence, natural region, place of residence, wealth quintile, health insurance, sex, and age. The Chi-square test (CI: 95%), PR, and RPa were used as measures of association. Results: An association was found between indigenous self-identification and brushing frequency, RP=0.98 (95%CI: 0.97-0.99). Likewise, association between the native mother tongue and brushing frequency, PR=0.97 (95%CI: 0.95-0.98). However, when applying the RPa with the covariates, no association was found. Conclusion: There is no association between ethnicity and dental brushing of children under 12 years of age during 2018 in our country.
