Prevalencia de las infecciones odontogénicas y el manejo terapéutico en el Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia durante la pandemia del COVID-19 desde el año 2020 a 2022

Abstract

Antecedentes: Debido a la crisis sanitaria por la pandemia del COVID-19, se suspendieron las atenciones odontológicas de rutina con el objetivo de reducir el riesgo de contagio a través de aerosoles, priorizándose los tratamientos estomatológicos de urgencia y emergencia. Como consecuencia de estas medidas implementadas durante la pandemia, los pacientes con focos infecciosos que no recibieron tratamiento oportuno y, debido a la progresión espontánea de la enfermedad desarrollaron infecciones odontogénicas de diversa gravedad. Objetivo: Identificar la prevalencia de las infecciones odontogénicas y el manejo terapéutico en el Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia durante la pandemia del COVID-19 desde el año 2020 a 2022. Material y métodos: Este estudio fue de tipo transversal, observacional, descriptivo y retrospectivo. Mediante el análisis de 128 historias clínicas de pacientes con infecciones odontogénicas que fueron atendidos en el Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia, entre los años 2020 y 2022, se logró determinar la prevalencia de las infecciones odontogénicas, las comorbilidades, si tuvieron o no COVID-19, la gravedad de las infecciones, y el manejo terapéutico. Resultados: De un total de 128 historias clínicas de pacientes con infecciones odontogénicas, se obtuvo una prevalencia promedio de 5.83% entre los años 2020 al 2022. Conclusiones: Durante la pandemia del COVID-19, se observó un aumento significativo en la prevalencia de infecciones odontogénicas en comparación con los años previos a la pandemia. Por consiguiente, se puede concluir que también hubo un incremento en la demanda de atenciones de emergencia por infecciones odontogénicas en los establecimientos de salud, durante este periodo.

Background: Due to the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, routine dental care was suspended with the aim of reducing the risk of contagion through aerosols, prioritizing urgent and emergency dental treatments. As a consequence of these measures implemented during the pandemic, patients with infectious foci who did not receive timely treatment and, due to the spontaneous progression of the disease, developed odontogenic infections of varying severity. Objective: Identify the prevalence of odontogenic infections and therapeutic management at the Cayetano Heredia National Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022. Material and methods: This study was cross-sectional, observational, descriptive, and retrospective. Through the analysis of 128 medical records of patients with odontogenic infections who were treated at the Cayetano Heredia National Hospital, between 2020 and 2022, it was possible to determine the prevalence of odontogenic infections, comorbidities, whether they had COVID-19, the severity of the infections, and the therapeutic management. Results: From a total of 128 medical records of patients with odontogenic infections, an average prevalence of 5.83% was obtained between 2020 to 2022. Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant increase in the prevalence of infections was observed. odontogenic compared to the years before the pandemic.
