Prevalencia de infecciones odontogénicas según el espacio anatómico comprometido en pacientes atendidos en un hospital público peruano

Abstract

Introducción: Las infecciones odontogénicas del espacio maxilofacial se refiere a infecciones que involucran espacios virtuales y planos faciales de la región maxilofacial por causa odontogénica. Se distinguen por la diseminación de infecciones bacterianas originadas en los dientes o en sus estructuras de soporte hacia los espacios vecinos de la cabeza y el cuello. Constituyen un conjunto de procesos infecciosos potencialmente graves, de alta frecuencia y una causa importante de hospitalizaciones que, en muchos casos, podrían evitarse. Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de infecciones odontogénicas según el espacio anatómico comprometido en pacientes atendidos en un Hospital Público Peruano. Materiales y Métodos: El estudio será descriptivo, analítico, de corte transversal y retrospectivo. La población incluirá a pacientes adultos atendidos entre enero de2022 y diciembre de 2025 en el Hospital Nacional Alberto Sabogal Sologuren que presentaron infección odontogénica en los espacios maxilofaciales. Las variables serán: edad, sexo y espacios anatómicos comprometidos. Se empleará la prueba de Chi-cuadrado con un intervalo de confianza del 95%. Conclusiones: Las infecciones odontogénicas deben ser tratadas de manera pronta y agresiva para evitar complicaciones y tiempo prolongado de hospitalización, siendo el especialista en Cirugía Bucal y Maxilofacial el profesional adecuado en tratarlo.

Introduction: Odontogenic infections of the maxillofacial spaces refer to infections involving the potential spaces and fascial planes of the maxillofacial region that originate from dental sources. They are characterized by the spread of bacterial infections from the teeth or their supporting structures into adjacent spaces of the head and neck. These conditions represent a group of potentially severe infections that occur frequently and are a significant cause of hospitalizations—many of which may be preventable. Objective: To determine the prevalence ofodontogenic infections by the anatomical space involved in patients treated at apublic hospital in Peru. Materials and Methods: The study will be descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional, and retrospective. The population will include adult patients treated between January 2022 and December 2025 at Hospital Nacional Alberto Sabogal Sologuren who presented with odontogenic infections of themaxillo facial spaces. Variables will include age, sex, and the anatomical spacesinvolved. The Chi-square test will be used with a 95% confidence interval.Conclusions: Odontogenic infections should be treated promptly and aggressively to prevent complications and prolonged hospitalization; the specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the appropriate professional to manage these cases.
