Frecuencia de infecciones postoperatorias tras cirugías bucales menores, en pacientes atendidos en un Centro Dental Docente, Lima-Perú, 2025

Abstract

Introducción: Las infecciones orales representan una de las principales complicaciones postoperatorias en cirugías bucales menores, siendo causadas por diversos microorganismos como bacterias, virus y hongos. De estas, las bacterias, principalmente Staphylococcus, Streptococcus y Prevotella, son las más prevalentes. Según datos emitidos por la OMS, 3.500 millones de habitantes en el mundo padecen de enfermedades orales. En el contexto de las cirugías bucales menores, la exodoncia de terceros molares viene a ser los procedimientos más habituales, con una incidencia de infecciones postoperatorias que varía entre 0.4 % y 6 %, incrementándose en pacientes mayores de 36 años. Objetivo general: Determinar la frecuencia de infecciones postoperatorias tras cirugías bucales menores en pacientes atendidos en un Centro Dental Docente, Lima-Perú, 2025. Materiales y métodos: Este estudio transversal, se planteó como objetivo determinar la frecuencia de infecciones postoperatorias tras cirugías bucales menores, en pacientes atendidos en el Centro Dental Docente, durante el periodo de enero a diciembre del 2025. Se evaluaron únicamente los casos de las historias clínicas que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión, excluyéndose aquellas que poseen antecedentes de enfermedades crónicas, inmunosupresión, tabaquismo, infecciones orales previas no tratadas, fracturas mandibulares o consumo de bifosfonatos. Conclusiones: En conclusión, este trabajo académico nos brinda información importante sobre la frecuencia de infecciones postoperatorias en cirugías orales menores, y aporta evidencia clave para elevar los estándares de la atención en salud bucodental, tanto en el sector público como privado.

Introduction: Oral infections represent one of the main postoperative complications in minor oral surgeries and are caused by various microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Among these, bacteria—primarily Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Prevotella—are the most prevalent. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), 3.5 billion people worldwide suffer from oral diseases. In the context of minor oral surgeries, third molar extractions are among the most common procedures, with a postoperative infection incidence ranging from 0.4% to 6%, increasing in patients over 36 years of age. General Objective: To determine the frequency of postoperative infections following minor oral surgeries in patients treated at a Dental Teaching Center, Lima–Peru, 2025. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the frequency of postoperative infections following minor oral surgeries in patients treated at the Dental Teaching, during the period from January to December 2025. Only clinical records that met the inclusion criteria were evaluated, excluding those with a history of chronic diseases, immunosuppression, smoking, untreated prior oral infections, mandibular fractures, or bisphosphonate use. Conclusions: In conclusion, this academic work provides important information on the frequency of postoperative infections in minor oral surgeries and offers key evidence to improve the standards of oral healthcare in both the public and private sectors.
