| spa |
| dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Metal artifacts in computed tomography (CT) degrade image quality and hinder diagnostic interpretation, necessitating a synthesis of evidence regarding reduction strategies. Objective: To map scientific evidence on strategies for reducing metal artifacts aimed at improving image quality in CT scans of the brain, facial skeleton, and neck in medium- and high-complexity healthcare institutions. Inclusion criteria: Studies involving patients undergoing CT with metal implantsin the regions of interest, published in English and Spanish between 2015 and 2025, were included. Methods and Materials: A scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and reported according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches were performed in PubMed, LILACS, Embase,Scopus, ScienceDirect, and gray literature sources. Results: Quantitative results showed a reduction in the metal artifact index from 572.0 to 88.4 with SEMAR; a decrease in image noise from 21.0 to 14.0 HU with VMI and from 18.8 to 11.8 HU with DLR + SEMAR; and an increase in CNR from 61% to 69% with MBIR. Additionally, the study population consisted predominantly of adults, limiting the ability to make quantitative comparisons across age groups. Conclusions: There isno single strategy for reducing metal artifacts, as the outcome depends on the interaction between technical parameters, CT technology, and reconstruction algorithms. | eng |
