Bajo nivel socioeconómico y problemas de salud mental en adolescentes de Lima Metropolitana

Abstract

Antecedente: Desde finales del siglo XX, se ha indagado la relación entre bajo nivel socioeconómico (NSE) y salud mental; se ha propuesto la existencia de un ciclo bidireccional entre estos dos. Hasta el momento, en el Perú no se ha realizado ningún estudio con una muestra representativa a nivel poblacional sobre bajo NSE y salud mental en adolescentes. Objetivo: El presente estudio pretende evaluar la relación entre bajo nivel socioeconómico y problemas de salud mental en adolescentes de Lima Metropolitana. Materiales y métodos: Se ha considerado realizar un estudio transversal analítico, en una muestra de tipo probabilística trietápica, usando la base de datos obtenidos de la encuesta efectuada por el Instituto Nacional de Salud Mental “Honorio Delgado – Hideyo Noguchi” (INSM). Resultados: Únicamente se encontró relación directa, estadísticamente significativa, entre fobia social y bajo NSE (p=0,031). De las demás variables de problemas de salud mental no hubo relación, estadísticamente significativa, con bajo NSE. Conclusiones: Se confirma una relación entre fobia social y bajo NSE en adolescentes que residen en Lima Metropolitana, en donde a mayor pobreza, mayor fobia social.

Background: Since the end of the 20th century, the relationship between low socioeconomic status (SES) and mental health has been investigated; the existence of a bidirectional cycle between these two has been proposed. To this day, no study has been carried out in Peru with a representative sample of the population on low SES and mental health in adolescents. Objective: The present study aims to evaluate the relationship between mental health disorders and socioeconomic status in adolescents in Metropolitan Lima. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was considered, in a probabilistic tri-stage sample, using the database obtained from the survey conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health "Honorio Delgado - Hideyo Noguchi" (INSM). Results: Only a statistically significant direct relationship was found between social phobia and low SES (p=0,031). The other variables of mental health disorders did not show a statistically significant relationship with low SES. Conclusions: A relationship between social phobia and low SES is confirmed in adolescents residing in Metropolitan Lima, where the greater the poverty, the greater the social phobia.
