| spa |
| dc.description.abstract | In the Quillcay river sub-basin of the Cordillera Blanca (Peru), the accelerated melting of tropical glaciers has become a top-tier environmental challenge. It is not surprising that this poses a critical challenge for more than 140,00 people, with direct consequences on water quality and supply and the generation of risks. The task of monitoring these glaciers is not easy; their surface is constantly retreating and seasonal variability, combined with intense cloud cover, complicates tracking. To address this, this research work offers a novel perspective: a method that integrates preprocessed Sentinel-2 images with a permanence algorithm in Python and a Random Forest model. With three thousand reference points for training, the Random Foresthas shown a great discriminative capacity, achieving an F1-score of 0.956 and a kappa of 0.933. By applying the permanence algorithm to the monthly series from 2016 to 2024, we have obtained annual maps that not only show the progression of the retreat but also categorize the glacier dynamics according to the persistence of the pixels. The validation was carried out with the INAIGEM inventory, which yielded good results: in 2020, the difference in the estimated area was minimal, at 0.08%, with an intersection over union (IoU) index of 0.833 and an intersection of 24.79 km2. It is a concordance that surpassed the NDSI method and better aligns with what is observable. Ultimately, the methodology we propose is a precise and replicable tool for dynamic monitoring in times of climate change, essential for good water planning and risk management. | eng |
