Objetivos. Comprender las representaciones sociales sobre la experiencia de enfermar de los pacientes de origen quechua con diagnóstico de diabetes tipo 2 de los hospitales Regional y Antonio Lorena del Cusco Metodología: Se trata de un estudio cualitativo basado en los principios de la interculturalidad y el paradigma interpretativo, utilizando la entrevista a profundidad. Las grabaciones de las entrevistas en quechua fueron transcritas y traducidas al español. Posteriormente las entrevistas fueron sometidas a un procesamiento informático para luego ser analizadas de acuerdo con las dimensiones del estudio. Resultados: La identidad social de los pacientes es indígena-mestiza, en pobreza material, de género femenino y de la tercera edad en mayor porcentaje. En las representaciones sociales de los pacientes sobre las características de la diabetes está presente la influencia predominante de la medicina moderna; sin embargo, en las correspondientes al tratamiento es importante la presencia de la medicina tradicional andina como complemento a la moderna. Conclusión: Las representaciones sociales sobre la diabetes de los pacientes de origen quechua, son un valioso aporte para una propuesta de educación y atención de salud interculturales.Objectives. To understand the social representations about the experience of getting sick of Quechua origin patients, with diabetes type 2 diagnose from Regional and Antonio Lorena hospitals in Cusco. Methodology: This is a qualitative study based on the principles of interculturality and the interpretive paradigm and using the deep interview. The recordings of the interviews in Quechua were transcribed and translated into Spanish. Subsequently, the interviews were subjected to computer processing and then analyzed according to the dimensions of the study. Results: The social identity of the patients is that they are indigenous-mestizo, in material poverty, mostly female and elderly. In the social representations of patients about the characteristics of diabetes, the predominant influence of modern medicine is present, however, in those corresponding to treatment, the presence of traditional Andean medicine is important as a complement to the modern approach. Conclusion: The social representations about diabetes of Quechua origin patients are a valuable contribution for an intercultural education and health care proposal.
