El objetivo fue identificar factores clínicos y epidemiológicos relacionados con la mortalidad en pacientes hospitalizados por shock séptico. Es un estudio retrospectivo tipo comparativo con niños de 1 mes a 14 años, hospitalizados por shock séptico del 2018 al 2020, en una Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos. Los pacientes se dividieron en fallecidos y vivos en base a su condición al alta de la Unidad. Se analizó cada grupo por separado y de forma comparativa entre ambos. Ingresaron 174 pacientes al estudio; fallecieron 51 (29,3%). Los fallecidos en comparación con los vivos fueron de mayor edad, tuvieron más casos oncológicos (31,4% vs 14,6%; p=0,011), presentaron con mayor frecuencia plaquetopenia (77% vs 42%; p<0,001) y pH menor o igual a 7,1 (31% vs 6%; p<0,001). En el análisis crudo exploratorio los principales factores que se relacionaron con la mortalidad fueron tener un pH menor o igual a 7,1 con un OR de 7,31 (IC 95%: 2,76 a 19,39), y presentar plaquetopenia con un OR de 4,59 (IC 95%: 2,14 a 9,84). En el análisis ajustado ambos factores mantuvieron esta relación, con un OR de 8,95 (IC 95%: 2,52 a 31,75) para un pH menor o igual a 7,1, y un OR de 3,89 (IC 95%: 1,40 a 10,84) para la plaquetopenia. Se concluye que los factores relacionados con la mortalidad en pacientes hospitalizados por shock séptico fueron tener plaquetopenia y un pH menor o igual a 7,1 en los controles realizados al ingreso de la UCIP.The objective was to identify clinical and epidemiological factors related to mortality in patients hospitalized for septic shock. This is a study retrospective comparative of children from one month to 14 years of age admitted with septic shock to a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit from 2018 to 2020. Patients were divided into deceased and alive, based on their condition at discharge from the Unit. The analysis was carried out in each group and in a comparative way between both. 174 patients entered into the study; 51 (29,3%) deceased. Deceased patients, in comparison with alive patients, were older, had more cases of cancer (31,4% vs 14,6%; p=0,011), presented thrombocytopenia more frequently (77% vs 42%; p<0,001) and had pH equal or lower tan 7,1 (31% vs 6%; p<0,001). In the crude exploratory analysis, the main factors associated with mortality were having a pH les tan, or equal to, 7,31 (CI 95%: 2,76–19,39), and presenting thrombocytopenia, with an OR of 4,59 (CI 95%: 2,14–9,84). In the adjusted analysis, both factors maintained this relationship, with an OR of 8,95 (CI 95%: 2,52–31,75) for a pH lower than, or equal to, 7,1, and an OR of 3,89 (CI 95%: 1,40– 10,84) for the thrombocytopenia. We concluded that factors related to mortality in patients admitted for septic shock were having thrombocytopenia and a pH lower tan 7,1 or equal in controls taken at their admission to the PICU.
