Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is the primary source of nutrition for every newborn during the first six months of life. In Peru, breastfeeding rates have declined following the pandemic. Self-efficacy plays a crucial role in breastfeeding and can be assessed using the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Short Scale (BSES-SF), originally developed in Canada. Objectives: This study aims to culturally adapt, validate, and establish the reliability of the BSES-SF scale. Material and methods: Study design, descriptive cross-sectional. First, the questions were adapted to the local language. Second, 10 experts evaluated the adaptation using three criteria. Third, the adapted scale was administered to a pilot group of 30 postpartum women. Finally, content validity, construct validity, and reliability were assessed in a sample of 248 postpartum women. Results: The content validity coefficient (CVC) obtained was 0.93. The construct validity was determined through confirmatory factor analysis, which demonstrated that the scale exhibits a unidimensional structure. Likewise, the t student test whose p value < 0.000 showed that there are significant differences between groups. Reliability analysis showed a Cronbach's alpha of 0.774 and intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.794. Conclusions: The findings indicate that the adapted BSES-SF scale demonstrates evidence of validity and reliability in measuring breastfeeding self-efficacy in Peru. Therefore, it can be considered a valid and reliable instrument for assessing breastfeeding self-efficacy in this population. |
