El estudio tuvo como objetivo realizar un estudio epidemiológico retrospectivo de pacientes con diagnóstico de fractura mandibular atendidos en el servicio de cirugía bucal y maxilofacial del Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia, lima 2012-2017. El tipo de estudio fue transversal, descriptivo, retrospectivo y analítico. La muestra fue determinada por un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia, donde se incluyó 168 historias clínicas completas, de las cuales 145 fueron de sexo masculino y 23 de sexo femenino. Los datos recolectados incluyeron sexo, Ciclo de vida, mecanismo y localización del trauma, así como el agente causal de la lesión. Los datos fueron procesados en un archivo Excel y analizados en el programa estadístico STATA. Para determinar la asociación entre el mecanismo de trauma y la localización anatómica de la fractura se utilizó la prueba de Chi cuadrado encontrándose que no existe diferencia significativa p=0.390. Además, no se encontró diferencia significativa entre la etapa de vida y el número de zonas afectadas p=0.084. Con respecto a la localización anatómica, tampoco existe diferencia significativa entre el sexo de los pacientes y su localización de la fractura, y no influye el ciclo de vida en que se encuentren dichos pacientes p=0.816 y p=0.279 respectivamente. Nuestro estudio concluye que, a pesar de no haber diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre las características epidemiológicas de las fracturas mandibulares, hay una mayor predisposición de fracturas mandibulares en el sexo masculino de 21 a 30 años. En relación con la anatomía con mayor predisposición a fracturas simples que involucren la parasínfisis y/o el cuerpo mandibular, siendo el mecanismo de trauma más descrito la agresión física.The aim of this study was to conduct a retrospective epidemiological study of patients diagnosed with mandibular fracture treated in the oral and maxillofacial surgery service of the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia, Lima, 2012-2017. The type of study was cross-sectional, descriptive, retrospective and analytical. The sample was determined by non-probabilistic convenience sampling, which included 168 complete medical records, of which 145 were male and 23 females. The data collected included sex, stage of life, mechanism and location of trauma, as well as the causal agent of the injury. The data were processed in an Excel file and analyzed in the STATA statistical program. To determine the association between the mechanism of trauma and the anatomical location of the fracture, the Chi square test was used, finding that there was no significant difference p=0.390. In addition, no significant difference was found between the age group and the number of affected areas p=0.084. Regarding the anatomical location, there is also no significant difference between the sex of the patients and their fracture location, and the age group in which these patients are found has no influence p=0.816 and p=0.279 respectively. Our study concludes that, despite there being no statistically significant differences between the epidemiological characteristics of mandibular fractures, there is a greater predisposition to mandibular fractures in males aged 21 to 30 years. In relation to anatomy, there is a greater predisposition to simple fractures involving the parasymphysis and/or the mandibular body, with physical aggression being the most described mechanism of trauma.
