dc.description.abstract Historically, many Latin American countries were severely iodine deficient. The areas most affected were the western mountain ranges extending from Mexico, through the Andes, as far as Chile. Surveys since the 1930s reported nearly all countries in the Region had endemic goiter. After the World Summit for Children in 1990, most Latin American countries implemented effective programs for the control IDD through universal salt iodization (USI)... en_US

Las áreas más afectadas fueron las cordilleras occidentales que se extienden desde México, a través de los Andes, hasta el sur de Chile. Encuestas conducidas desde los años 1930s mostraron que casi todos los países de la región tenían bocio endémico. Después de la Cumbre Mundial por la Infancia en 1990, la mayoría de los países latinoamericanos implementaron programas efectivos para el control de los DDI a través de la yodación universal de la sal (USI). es_PE
