Health-care systems in low-income and middle-income countries have not adequately responded to the substantial burden linked to mental health, resulting in enormous treatment gaps and major shortcomings in the delivery of mental health care. Peru is no stranger to this issue, and has attempted to implement several measures to improve mental health care over the past 50 years.
