Prevalencia de la ansiedad dental en niños entre 7 a 12 años atendidos en un centro dental docente en Lima, Perú 2025

Abstract

Introducción: La ansiedad dental es un estado aprensivo intenso caracterizado por sentimientos negativos asociados a situaciones desconocidas que potencialmente puedan causar malestar durante el tratamiento afectando negativamente la calidad de vida relacionada a la salud oral. Estudios sugieren que la mayoría de adultos que reportan tener ansiedad dental, tuvieron su primera experiencia en la niñez. En niños, la prevalencia de ansiedad presenta amplia variabilidad atribuida a factores sociales y culturales, así como a características individuales determinantes como género, edad, experiencias previas odontológicas, historia de dolor dental que influencian el suceso de ansiedad dental. Objetivo general: Determinar la prevalencia de la ansiedad dental en niños de 7 a 12 años atendidos en el Centro Dental Docente de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia en Lima-Perú en el año 2025. Materiales y métodos: El presente estudio es observacional de tipo transversal. La población son niños entre las edades de 7 a 12 años. La selección dela muestra será mediante el método por conveniencia no probabilístico y no aleatorio. Se obtendrá el consentimiento informado a los adultos responsables y el asentimiento informado a los niños menores de 12 años. El adulto responsable llenará la ficha de datos del paciente y se les enseñará a los niños la plantilla de escala de Imagen Facial y solicitandoles que nos señalen una cara con la cual ellos identificaban la manera en que se sienten antes de ingresar a su cita odontológica. Los resultados serán recopilados en la plataforma Google Forms asignándoles un código por paciente para mantener el anonimato. Conclusiones: Se concluye que es importante determinar la prevalencia de ansiedad dental en niños de nuestra población local y su relación con características individuales. La ejecución de este estudio nos brindará información para optimizar nuestros recursos y planificar sesiones educativas eficientes.

Introduction: Dental anxiety is an intense apprehensive state characterized by negative feelings associated with unfamiliar situations that can potentially cause discomfort during treatment, negatively affecting oral health-related quality of life. Studies suggest that most adults who report experiencing dental anxiety had their first experience in childhood. In children, the prevalence of anxiety also varies widely, attributed to social and cultural factors. However, determining individual characteristics such as gender, age, previous dental experiences, and a history of dental pain have also been recognized as influencing the occurrence of dental anxiety. Objective: To determine the prevalence of dental anxiety in children aged 7 to 12 years treated at the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University Dental Teaching Center in Lima, Peru, in 2025. Materials and methods: This study is a crosssectional, observational study. The study population is children aged 7 to 12 years. The sample was selected using a non-probabilistic, non-random convenience method. Informed consent will be obtained from the responsible adults, and informed assent will be obtained from children under 12 years of age. The responsible adult will complete the patient information form, and the children will be shown the Facial Image Scale template and asked to identify a face they identified with the way they felt before arriving for their dental appointment. Finally, the child's response will be recorded on a data record form with their initials for identification. All results will be compiled on the Google Forms platform, and each patient will be assigned a code to maintain anonymity. Conclusions: It is important to determine the prevalence of dental anxiety in children in our local population and its relationship with individual characteristics. Conducting this study will provide us with information to optimize our resources and plan effective educational sessions.
