Cleft lip and palate is a congenital malformation that affects facial structures and the oral cavity. The CRECIENDO program addresses this condition through an integral approach focused on oral health care. Objective: To determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and their association with the oral hygiene index in children with cleft lip and palate inthe CRECIENDO program between the years 2015 to 2023. Materials and Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional, and analytical observational study examined the records (medical histories, files, attached forms in physical and digital formats, and database) of 118 children participating in the CRECIENDO program at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. The variables analyzed included oral hygiene index, health history, and sociodemographic characteristics of the children, as well as information from their parents. Statistical analysis included the presentation of descriptive tables, bivariate tests (Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman correlation),and, for multivariate analysis, hierarchical multiple linear regression. Results: A total of 118 children were evaluated with a mean age of 6.16 ±1.62 years, of whom 69.49% (n=82) were male. The DI-S index showed a predominance of poor oral hygiene in 55.93% (n=66) and fair hygiene in 39.83% (n=47), while only 4.24% (n=5) presented adequate hygiene. The mean DI-S value was 2.03±0.72. No significant bivariate associations were identified between the DI-S and the independent variables. In the hierarchical linear regression analysis, the evaluated models did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Oral hygiene, evaluated using the DI-S index, was predominantly unfavorable, with a clear prevalence of poor and fair levels. Furthermore, the multivariate analysis showed that the evaluated variables do not explain the variability of DI-S; these findings highlight the need to strengthen health education strategies and preventive monitoring within the program to reverse the unfavorable levels of oral hygiene.
