| spa |
| dc.description.abstract | This analytical-experimental study used a crossover design, to asses how working postures—specifically sitting and standing—affect the physical load, mental demand, and overall performance of independent sewers. Twenty-six sewers from Metropolitan Lima with ≥ 1 year of experience participated. They performed the same standardized sewing task under both postural conditions, acting as their own control. Physical load was assessed using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and the Borg CR-10 scale; mental load with the NASA Task Load Index (NASA - TLX); and performance through execution time and a sewing quality checklist. A significance level of α = 0.05 was assumed. The standing posture significantly increased ergonomic risk, particularly in the load on the lower limbs, compared to the seated posture (RULA: χ² = 60.24; p < 0.01). Likewise, perceived physical effort was higher when working standing (Borg: p = 0.037). Regarding mental load, higher global scores were observed in the standing posture (p = 0.033), mainly explained by increased physical demand (p = 0.048) and effort required (p = 0.053). Regarding performance, the quality of the finish decreased significantly when sewing in a standing position (p = 0.01), while the time required remained similar under both conditions (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the standing posture, in addition to increasing the physical and mental demands on the operators, directly impairs work precision. Conversely, a seated posture and an ergonomically appropriate environment ensure greater well-being and efficiency. | eng |
