The aim of the study was to evaluate the enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot test (EITB) in the serological diagnosis of ovine hydatidosis. In total, 80 Corriedale sheep from SAIS Pachacútec, Junín, Peru, were used and the results compared with the necropsy (gold standard). The simultaneous presence of three antigenic bands (8, 16 and 21 kDa) in the EITB was considered a positive result, while the necropsy result was positive if there was at least one cyst in the liver or lungs. The EITB showed a low sensitivity (31.2%) and a high specificity (100%). Likewise, positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive values of 100 and 5.4%, respectively, but without significant association (p=0.55) between the test result and the presence of cysts. To determine the usefulness of EITB in the detection of active cysts, the presence of at least one antigenic band was considered as positive and as an active cyst (active infection) the structure that, due to its macroscopic conditions, could contain cells capable of proliferating under adequate conditions. The results showed a high sensitivity (93.6%) of the test to identify active cystic lesions with PPV of 60.3% and NPV of 57.1%, although the results were not statistically significant (p=0.439). The findings show that the EITB test reaction is not necessarily more sensitive when active cysts are present.El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la prueba de inmunoelectrotransferencia blot (EITB) en el diagnóstico serológico de la hidatidosis ovina. Se trabajó con 80 ovinos Corriedale de la SAIS Pachacútec, Junín, Perú y se comparó los resultados con la necropsia (Gold estándar). La presencia simultánea de tres bandas antigénicas (8, 16 y 21 kDa) en el EITB fueron consideradas como un resultado positivo, en tanto que el resultado a la necropsia fue positivo si existía al menos un quiste a nivel del hígado o de los pulmones. El EITB evidenció una baja sensibilidad (31.2%) y una alta especificidad (100%). Así mismo, se obtuvieron valores predictivo positivo (VPP) y negativo (VPN) de 100 y 5.4%, respectivamente, pero sin asociación significativa (p=0.55) entre el resultado de la prueba y la presencia de quistes. Para determinar la utilidad del EITB en la detección de quistes activos, se consideró como positivo la presencia de al menos una banda antigénica y como quiste activo (infección activa) a aquella estructura que por sus condiciones macroscópicas podría contener células capaces de proliferar en condiciones adecuadas. Los resultados mostraron una alta sensibilidad (93.6%) de la prueba para identificar lesiones quísticas activas con VPP de 60.3% y VPN de 57.1%, aunque los resultados no fueron estadísticamente significativos (p=0.439). Los hallazgos evidencian que la reacción de la prueba de EITB no necesariamente es más sensible cuando hay presencia de quistes activos.
