Introducción: Aproximadamente el 43% de la población de Ecuador es considerada como población vulnerable debido a que ha migrado internamente. La migración y la urbanización se han asociado con un mayor riesgo de sobrepeso y obesidad. Sin embargo, la información científica sobre población ecuatoriana que ha migrado es escasa. Objetivo: Investigar si existe una asociación entre la migración local y el sobrepeso / obesidad en una muestra por conveniencia de adultos en Guayaquil Ecuador en 2017. Materiales y métodos: Estudio analítico y transversal. Se utilizaron datos obtenidos de una muestra por conveniencia de adultos en Guayaquil Ecuador en 2017 (n = 466). La principal variable de exposición fue el estado migratorio (sí vs no). La principal variable de resultado fue el sobrepeso / obesidad definida según los criterios de la OMS. Se utilizaron análisis de regresión logística ajustados y no ajustados para calcular los odds ratios (OR) y los niveles de confianza (IC) del 95%. Resultados: La prevalencia de sobrepeso / obesidad fue del 61%. El OR ajustado para la asociación entre el estado migratorio y la obesidad fue 0,99 (IC del 95%: 0,87 - 1,14). El OR ajustado para la asociación entre el estado migratorio y la obesidad fue 0,94 (IC del 95%: 0,77 - 1,14) no significativo. Conclusiones: El estado migratorio no se asoció con obesidad ni sobrepeso. Sin embargo, debido a la alta prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en ese grupo, se necesitan intervenciones dirigidas al sobrepeso / obesidad.Introduction: Approximately, 43% of the population in Ecuador are considered as vulnerable population due to internal displacement or migration. Local migration and urbanization have been associated with an increased risk of overweight and obesity. However, scientific information from the displaced Ecuadorian population is scant. Objective: To investigate whether there is an association between local migration and being overweight/obese in a conveniency sample of adults in Guayaquil Ecuador in 2017. Measurement Methods: Analytical, cross sectional study using data obtained from a conveniency sample of adults in Guayaquil Ecuador in 2017 (n=466). The main exposure variable was migration status (yes vs no). The main outcome variable was overweight/obesity defined using the WHO criteria. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression analysis were used to calculate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence levels (CI). Results: The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 61%. The adjusted OR for the association between migration status and obesity was 0.99 (95% CI 0.87 – 1.14). The adjusted OR for the association between migration status and obesity was 0.94 (95% CI 0.77 - 1.14) not significant. Conclusions: Migration status was not associated with obesity or overweight. However, due to the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in that group, interventions targeting overweight/obesity are needed.
