El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la percepción de pobladores y comerciantes del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad del Cusco, acerca de la presencia de perros vagabundos en la ciudad. El estudio correspondió a una investigación observacional transversal. El instrumento de recolección de datos consideró: información demográfica del encuestado, percepción acerca de los perros vagabundos como un problema, opinión de los encuestados sobre posibles soluciones, y disponibilidad de los propietarios de canes para el control de la población canina. La información obtenida en las encuestas fue transferida a una base de datos en Excel y analizada mediante estadística descriptiva. Se encuestaron 400 personas (200 pobladores y 200 comerciantes). El 66% y 64% de pobladores y comerciantes, respectivamente, indicaron que la presencia de perros vagabundos era un problema. El 58.5% y el 38% de pobladores y comerciantes opinaron que la mayoría de estos perros tenían dueño. Además, el 53.5% de comerciantes indicaron haber recibido quejas de sus clientes por la presencia de estos canes. Los principales problemas para los encuestados fueron: ensuciar las calles (51.5%), afectar el turismo (40.8%) y producir contaminación sonora (40.5%). Según los encuestados, quienes se deben de hacer cargo de este problema son las municipalidades (50.3%) y el Ministerio de Salud (19.8%). Las soluciones para esta problemática fueron la esterilización de hembras y castración de machos (41%), eutanasia (15.8%) e identificación de mascotas (13.8%). Como control reproductivo se mencionó esterilizar a las hembras (83.8%), castrar machos (49%) y el 77.3% de encuestados estaba dispuesto a pagar por estos procedimientos. Se espera que estos resultados sirvan como base para la implementación de un programa de control de la población canina y educación en temas de tenencia responsable en la población del lugar de estudio.The objective of this study was to determine the perception of residents and merchants regarding stray dogs in the historic center of the City of Cusco, Peru. The study corresponds to an observational research being the target population of the residents and merchants who are within the Historic Center. The data collection instrument consists of the following variables: demographic information, age, sex, perception of stray dogs as a problem, opinion of respondents about solutions to the problem, availability of cane owners to address the issue of overpopulation. The information from the surveys was carried out in an Excel database and analyzed using descriptive statistics. 400 surveys were analyzed (divided into 2 groups: residents and merchants). 66% of residents and 64% of merchants indicated that the presence of stray dogs was a problem. 58.5% of residents and 38% of merchants believed that most of these dogs had an owner. In addition, 53.5% of merchants indicated having received complaints from their customers about the presence of these canes. The main problems for those surveyed were: dirtying the streets (51.5%), affecting tourism (40.8%), producing noise pollution. According to the respondents, who should take charge of this problem is the municipality of each district (50.3%), Ministry of Health (19.8%). The solutions for this problem, according to the respondents, were: Spaying/neutering (41%), euthanasia (15.8%), identification of pets (13.8%). As for reproductive control, a trial of the respondents was spaying (83.8%), neutering (49%) and 77.3% of respondents were willing to pay for the reproductive control of their animals. These results are expected to serve as the basis for the implementation of a canine population control program and to disseminate the importance of responsible ownership and public health for the population.
