Antecedentes: Tras la aparición de la enfermedad por coronavirus (COVID-19), la mortalidad de los pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) ha aumentado en mayor medida con respecto a los pacientes no diabéticos. Objetivo: Estimar y comparar las tasas de mortalidad asociadas a la DM2 en el Perú y regiones, según los registros del Sistema Informático Nacional de Defunciones (SINADEF), antes (2017 a 2019) y durante la pandemia por COVID-19 (2020-2021). Materiales y métodos: Estudio tipo transversal en base a las defunciones que registraron a la DM2 como una de las 6 causas de muerte en la base de datos SINADEF en el periodo del 01 de enero del 2017 al 30 de junio del 2022. Calculamos la tasa de mortalidad de forma mensual y anual. Estandarizamos la tasa de mortalidad en el Perú y por región de forma anual. Resultados: Las tasas de mortalidad asociadas a DM2 estandarizadas a nivel nacional para los años 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 y 2021 fueron 20.3, 23.0, 24.5, 61.7 y 58.5 por 100,000 habitantes, respectivamente. Los hombres representaron el 51.1% de muertes y la media de edad fue 75 años. En los 5 años de estudio, la región con mayor mortalidad fue Madre de Dios. Conclusiones: La tasa de mortalidad asociada a DM2 varió en los últimos 5 años, siendo mayor durante los años 2020 y 2021. El total de muertes asociadas a DM2 sin COVID-19 superó al total de muertes asociadas a DM2 y COVID-19.
Background: After the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has increased more than in nondiabetic patients. Objective: To estimate and compare mortality rates associated with T2DM in Peru and its regions, according to the records of the National Informatic System of Deaths (SINADEF), before (2017 to 2019) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021). Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study based on deaths that registered T2DM as one of the 6 causes of death in the SINADEF database, from January 1st, 2017 to June 30th, 2022. Monthly and annual mortality rates were calculated. The annual mortality rates in Peru and its regions were standardized. Results: The nationwide standardized T2DM-associated mortality rates for the years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2019, 2020, and 2021 were 20.3, 23.0, 24.5, 61.7, and 58.5 per 100,000 population, respectively. Males accounted for 51.1% of deaths and the mean age was 75 years. During the 5 years of study, the region with the highest mortality was Madre de Dios. Conclusions: The mortality rate associated with T2DM varied over the last 5 years, being higher during the years 2020 and 2021. The total deaths associated with T2DM without COVID-19 exceeded the total deaths associated with T2DM and COVID-19.
