Introducción: Las infecciones de catéter venoso central (CVC) son una complicación de la hemodiálisis frecuente que afecta a los pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica sometidos a este procedimiento. Objetivo: Determinar las características epidemiológicas, microbiológicas y clínicas en pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica terminal en hemodiálisis que desarrollaron infecciones de CVC en un hospital nivel III en Lima-Perú. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una serie de casos descriptiva, retrospectiva, con pacientes adultos con enfermedad renal crónica terminal con diagnóstico de infección de CVC admitidos en el Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza durante el periodo de estudio. Las variables fueron presentadas en frecuencias, medias más desviaciones estándar y medianas más rangos intercuartílicos. Resultados: Se incluyeron 27 casos de infección de CVC, con una mediana de edad de 67 años [55-71] y 56% del sexo femenino. 17 (62,96%) portaban un catéter yugular tunelizado, 5 (18,51%) un catéter yugular no tunelizado, 2 (7,40%) un catéter femoral tunelizado, y 3 (11,11%) un catéter femoral no tunelizado. 10 (37,04%) pacientes presentaron una infección previa. 20 (74,07%) pacientes presentó fiebre. La media del valor de leucocitos fue 13 404 cél/mm3 (±5 879). Se aisló Staphylococcus aureus en el 31,58% de cultivos positivos. Conclusión: Los pacientes con infección de catéter fueron principalmente de sexo femenino, adultos mayores, con CVC tunelizado a nivel yugular. La fiebre fue el signo clínico más frecuente y Staphylococcus aureus sensible a meticilina fue el germen más frecuentemente aislado.

Materials and methods: We performed a descriptive, retrospective case series with adult patients with Stage 5 chronic kidney disease diagnosed with catheter-related infection admitted to the Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital during the study period. Variables are presented as frequencies, means with standard deviations and medians with interquartile ranges. Results: 27 cases of catheter-related infection were included with a median age of 67 years [55- 71], and 56% of female sex. 17 (62.96%) had a tunneled, jugular catheter, 5 (18.51%) a non-tunneled, jugular catheter, 2 (7.40%) a tunneled, femoral catheter, and 3 (11.11%) a non-tunneled femoral catheter. 10 (37.04%) patients had previous infections. 20 (74.07%) patients developed fever. The mean value of leukocytes was 13 404/mm3 (±5 879). Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in 31.58% of positive cultures. Conclusion: Patients with a catheter related infection were mostly of female sex, elderly adults and had a jugular tunneled catheter. Fever was the most frequent clinical sign and Methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently isolated microorganism.
