Taenia solium es un cestodo que causa neurocisticercosis (NCC), una enfermedad que afecta el sistema nervioso central, y es considerado como la principal causa de epilepsia adquirida en el mundo. El estadio de postoncosfera es una etapa temprana del cisticerco de T. solium (causante de la NCC); y el estudio de sus proteínas es importante para identificar antígenos para el inmunodiagnóstico, así como, para comprender la relación huésped-parásito. En esta investigación se realizó 2 estudios, el primero consistió en una revisión sistemática y metaanálisis de la sensibilidad y especificidad del western blot para el inmunodiagnóstico de la NCC; mientras que el segundo estudio consistió en la caracterización de las proteínas de postoncosfera reconocidas por anticuerpos de pacientes con NCC. En el primer estudio, el metaanálisis estimó que el western blot tiene una sensibilidad del 78.9% [IC95%:71.8% - 83.6%] y una especificidad del 97.6% [IC95%;95.7%-98.7%] para el diagnóstico de la NCC, sin embargo, estos datos varían dependiendo del tipo de antígeno, el tipo de estudio, el número y estado del cisticerco en el cerebro. En el segundo estudio se detectó bandas proteicas (23, 46 y 48 kDa) de postoncosfera que son reconocidas por el 98% y 100% de pacientes con NCC parenquimatosa y subaracnoidea respectivamente; por espectrometría de masas se identificó las proteínas presentes en las bandas de postoncosfera que podrían ser evaluadas como candidatos para el inmunodiagnóstico y en el estudio de la modulación de la respuesta inmune y establecimiento de la postoncosfera en el hospedero.Taenia solium is a cestode that causes neurocysticercosis (NCC), a disease that affects the central nervous system, and is considered the leading cause of acquired epilepsy in the world. Postoncospheral form are early T. solium cysticercus stages (which causes NCC) and the study of its proteins is important to identify targets for the immunodiagnosis and to understand the host-parasite relationship. In this research 2 studies were carried out, the first consisted of a systematic review and meta-analysis of the sensitivity and specificity of the western blot for the immunodiagnosis of NCC; while the second study consisted of the characterization of the postoncosphere proteins recognized by antibodies of NCC patients. In the first study, the meta-analysis estimated that western blot has a sensitivity of 78.9% [95%CI: 71.8%-83.6%] and a specificity of 97.6% [95% CI: 95.7%-98.7%] for the immunodiagnosis of NCC, however, these data vary depending on the antigen type, the study type, and the number and state of the cysticercus in the brain. In the second study, antigenic protein bands (23, 46 and 48 kDa) of postoncosphere were recognized by 98% and 100% of patients with parenchymal and subarachnoid NCC respectively; mass spectrometry identified the proteins present in the post-oncosphere bands that could be evaluated as candidates for diagnosis and for the study of the modulation of the immune response and establishment of the post-oncosphere in the host.
