En el 2021 se implementó el laboratorio de Citogenética Humana en el Hospital Nacional Ramiro Priale Priale (HNRPP) en la ciudad de Huancayo, a 3,240 m.s.n.m, siendo este el primer laboratorio de citogenética del país ubicado sobre los 3,000 m de altura para pacientes de la Red Asistencial Junín, que abarca geográficamente el centro del país. Entre el 2021 y 2022 se realizaron 268 cariotipos de los cuales 33 indicaron la presencia de una aberración cromosómica, en orden de frecuencia: Síndrome de Down 75% en trisomía libre, 6% en mosaicismo, Síndrome de Turner 6% en monosomía, 9% en mosaicismo y Síndrome de Edwards 3%. En los registros de partos en el mismo periodo, se diagnosticaron entre diversos laboratorios, incluyendo el del HNRPP, 14 pacientes con Síndrome de Down y 2 con Síndrome de Edwards de 4462 nacidos vivos, indicando una frecuencia de 31 y de 4 por cada 10,000 nacimientos respectivamente, frecuencia mayor a la reportada internacionalmente para Síndrome de Down, pero menor a la reportada en otras regiones del Perú. Los casos de Síndrome de Down se asociaron con la edad materna avanzada (>=35 años) obteniendo una tasa de riesgo de 5.6 (IC del 95%: 1.7 – 17.8, p < 0.01). En conclusión, se reportaron los resultados obtenidos por el laboratorio de Citogenética Humana, indicando las aberraciones cromosómicas encontradas, principalmente los casos de Síndrome de Down y su asociación con la edad materna.
In 2021, the Human Cytogenetics Laboratory was implemented at the Hospital Nacional Ramiro Priale Priale (HNRPP) in Huancayo, at an altitude of 3,240 meters above sea level. This is the first cytogenetics laboratory in the country located above 3,000 meters for patients from the “Red Asistencial Junín”, which geographically covers the central region of the country. Between 2021 and 2022, 268 karyotypes were performed, of which 33 indicated the presence of a chromosomal aberration, in order of frequency: Down Syndrome 75% in free trisomy, 6% in mosaicism; Turner Syndrome 6% in monosomy, 9% in mosaicism; and Edwards Syndrome 3%. During the same period, birth records from the hospital identified 14 patients with Down Syndrome and 2 with Edwards Syndrome diagnosed by various laboratories, including the HNRPP. Out of 4,462 live births, this indicates frequencies of 31 and 4 per 10,000 births, respectively. These frequencies are higher than those reported internationally for Down Syndrome but lower than those reported in other regions of Peru. Down Syndrome cases were associated with advanced maternal age (>=35 years), with a risk rate of 5.6 (95% CI: 1.7 – 17.8, p < 0.01). In conclusion, the results obtained by the Human Cytogenetics Laboratory are reported, highlighting the chromosomal aberrations found, particularly Down Syndrome, and its association with maternal age.
