El estudio tuvo como objetivo cuantificar los índices demográficos y determinar la población de felinos domésticos mantenidos en viviendas del distrito de Jesús María – Lima, en el año 2024. La Municipalidad planificó y ejecutó encuestas en las 9 zonas en la que está distribuido el distrito en junio del presente año. A partir de ellas la información fue transferida una base de datos y fue analizada mediante estadística descriptiva. Se recolectaron 751 encuestas válidas las que provinieron de viviendas tipo departamentos (62.7%) y casas, en donde predominaban 3 a 5 habitantes por vivienda. El 17.2% (129) de los encuestados mencionó tener gatos. La relación persona: gato fue de 9.84 (2509 personas/255 gatos) y la población total de gatos estimada fue de 7,658. El número de crías por parto fue de 5.4 y la tasa de supervivencia de las crías fue de 81.4%. La esperanza de vida de los gatos fue de 8 años, con una mediana y moda de 7 y 10 años, respectivamente. Los valores extremos reportados fueron de 1 y 17 años. La causa de muerte más citada fueron enfermedad (40%, 8) envenenamiento (25%, 5) y accidentes (15%, 3). La información de 247 gatos reportados arrojó una edad media de 5.4 años con mediana y moda de 4 y 3 años respectivamente y valor mínimo de 0.3 años y máximo de 19 años. Predominaron animales de sexo hembra (54.5%), mestizos (90.2%) y esterilizados (81.8%). No se encontró diferencia estadística entre la proporción de los animales castrados por sexo o raza. Se espera que los resultados sirvan de línea se base a las autoridades del distrito de Jesús María y a partir de allí planificar intervenciones en tenencia responsable que permitan el control poblacional y la mejora del bienestar de los gatos del distrito.The study aimed to quantify demographic indices and determine the population of domestic cats kept in households in the Jesús María district of Lima in 2024. A total of 751 valid surveys were collected, with responses coming from apartment-type homes (62.7%) and houses, where the majority of households had 3 to 5 residents. 17.2% (129) of respondents reported having cats. The person-to-cat ratio was 9.84 (2509 people/255 cats), and the total estimated cat population was 7,658. The number of kittens per litter was 5.4, and the survival rate of the kittens was 81.4%. The average life expectancy of cats was 8 years, with a median and mode of 7 and 10 years, respectively. The extreme values reported were 1 and 17 years. The most common causes of death were illness (40%, 8), poisoning (25%, 5), and accidents (15%, 3). Information from 247 cats reported an average age of 5.4 years, with a median and mode of 4 and 3 years, respectively, and a minimum age of 0.3 years and maximum age of 19 years. Female cats (54.5%), mixed breeds (90.2%), and sterilized cats (81.8%) predominated. No statistical difference was found between the proportion of neutered animals by sex or breed. The results are expected to serve as a baseline for the authorities in the Jesús María district, allowing them to plan interventions for responsible pet ownership to control the cat population and improve the well-being of cats in the district.
