dc.description.abstract	Introducción: La periodontitis apical es una inflamación crónica de los tejidos periapicales causada principalmente por infecciones bacterianas persistentes dentro del sistema de conductos radiculares. Radiográficamente, la periodontitis apical se manifiesta como una lesión radiolúcida alrededor del ápice dental. Las radiografías periapicales combinadas con el examen clínico han sido durante mucho tiempo el estándar para el diagnóstico endodóntico. El retratamiento no quirúrgico constituye una estrategia fundamental, el cual permite, limpiar, conformar el sistema de conductos radiculares y sellarlo tridimensionalmente para prevenir la reinfección del diente, sin embargo, la anatomía del sistema radicular desempeña un papel crucial en el éxito o fracaso del tratamiento, siendo el signo más frecuente de fracaso la presencia de radiolucidez periapical. El dolor persistente, sensibilidad a la percusión, movilidad dental y presencia de fístulas, están asociadas con un mayor riesgo de fracaso endodóntico y con la necesidad de retratamiento. Es fundamental realizar una investigación más detallada sobre las características clínicas asociadas con la presencia de radiolucidez periapical en dientes que requieren retratamiento. Objetivo: Describir las características clínicas asociadas a la presencia de periodontitis apical en pacientes con indicación de retratamiento endodóntico atendidos en un Centro Dental Docente de Lima, Perú, entre 2015 y 2024. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio observacional, retrospectivo y analítico. La muestra incluyó historias clínicas de pacientes del Centro Dental Docente de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia con indicación de retratamiento endodóntico. Las variables independientes incluyeron la presencia de PA, y las dependientes fueron características clínicas como dolor, sensibilidad a la percusión (horizontal y vertical), hinchazón gingival y movilidad dental. También se consideraron covariables como sexo, edad, tipo de diente y arco dental. Conclusiones: Este estudio fortalecerá y actualizará conceptos clínicos, proporcionando bases sólidas para optimizar la práctica odontológica y respaldar decisiones terapéuticas fundamentadas científicamente, promoviendo tratamientos más eficaces y conservadores.	es_ES
dc.description.abstract	Introduction: Apical periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the periapical tissues caused mainly by persistent bacterial infections within the root canal system. Radiographically, apical periodontitis manifests as a radiolucent lesion around the tooth apex. Periapical radiographs combined with clinical examination have long been the standard for endodontic diagnosis. Non-surgical retreatment is a fundamental strategy, which allows to clean, shape and seal the root canal system three-dimensionally to prevent reinfection of the tooth. However, the anatomy of the root system plays a crucial role in the success or failure of treatment, the most frequent sign of failure being the presence of periapical radiolucency. Persistent pain, tenderness to percussion, tooth mobility and the presence of fistulas are associated with an increased risk of endodontic failure and the need for retreatment. Further investigation into the clinical characteristics associated with the presence of periapical radiolucency in teeth requiring retreatment is essential. Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics associated with the presence of apical periodontitis in patients with an indication for endodontic retreatment treated at a Teaching Dental Center in Lima, Peru, between 2015 and 2024. Materials and Methods: An observational, retrospective, and analytical study was carried out. The sample included clinical records of patients from the Teaching Dental Center of the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia with an indication for endodontic retreatment. Independent variables included the presence of AP, and dependent variables were clinical characteristics such as pain, tenderness to percussion (horizontal and vertical), gingival swelling, and tooth mobility. Covariates such as sex, age, tooth type, and dental arch were also considered. Conclusions: This study will strengthen and update clinical concepts, providing a solid foundation for optimizing dental practice and supporting scientifically based therapeutic decisions, promoting more effective and conservative treatments.	es_ES
