El cáncer de cérvix es un problema de salud pública en nuestro país, según las cifras de incidencia y prevalencia de las principales organizaciones nacionales y mundiales. La sexualidad es un componente esencial de la calidad de vida de todas las personas, y ésta se ve impactada negativamente desde el momento del diagnóstico de cáncer de cérvix. Los tratamientos que se aplican incluyen: cirugía, quimioterapia y radioterapia, los que si bien es cierto, han permitido incrementar notoriamente las tasas de sobrevida, pueden tener efectos secundarios en la sexualidad de las pacientes, abarcando síntomas físicos y psicoemocionales, como: dispareunia, cambios vaginales como atrofia, estenosis o estrechez, menopausia precoz, cambios en la autopercepción del cuerpo, reducción de la autoestima, sentimientos de ansiedad, depresión, temor a la muerte, entre otros. A pesar que el desmedro de la calidad de vida sexual y global es notorio, y se evidencia en un gran porcentaje de pacientes, el tema es poco tratado durante la consulta médica por factores que abarcan tanto a las pacientes como al personal de salud y que se ven influenciados por creencias sociales, religiosas y culturales. Por esta razón, es crucial resaltar que se necesita continuar investigando el tema y capacitando al personal de salud para que pueda abordarlo con asertividad y así poder brindar las medidas necesarias para el alivio de la sintomatología física, psicológica y emocional.Cervical cancer is still a public health problem in our country, according to incidence and prevalence figures of the main national and world organizations. Sexuality is an essential component of quality of life of all people, and this is negatively impacted from the moment of diagnosis of cervical cancer, generating symptoms such as bleeding, descents, pelvic pain and emotional distress. The treatments that are applied may include: surgery, chemotherapy andradio therapy; which, although it is true, have allowed a notorious increase in survival rates, may have harmful side effects on the sexuality of patients, including physical and psycho-emotional symptoms, including the following conditions: dyspareunia, vaginal changes such as atrophy, stenosis or tightness, early menopause, changes in body self-perception, reduced self-esteem, feelings of anxiety, depression, fear of death, among other. Despite the fact that the deterioration of sexual and overall quality of life is notorious, and is evident in a large percentage of patients, the issue is little addressed during medical consultation due to factors that involve both patients and health personnel and that are influenced by social, religious and cultural beliefs. For this reason, it is crucial to highlight the need to continue researching the topic and training health personals, so that they can approach it with assertiveness, and thus be able to provide the necessary measures to alleviate physical, psychological and emotional symptoms.
