Abstract:
The wellbeing of women is a crucial, albeit difficult to achieve, goal. Improved maternal health was an important Millennium Development Goal and maternal mortality is a persistent challenge. Maternal mental health and its determinants, often overlooked in goal-setting, are also very important to both mothers' and their offsprings' wellbeing and development. Only fairly recently has maternal suicide in pregnancy and post partum been acknowledged as a problem, following earlier thinking was that pregnancy was protective for mental health and prevented suicide.
