Abstract:
Garcia et al. (June 16 issue) conclude that the transmission of taeniasis and cysticercosis was interrupted in a region in which these diseases are endemic owing to mass drug administration in humans and pigs. We are not convinced that this costly strategy provides a long-term solution for eradicating taeniasis and cysticercosis. Mass drug administration is a temporary solution, since unhealthful conditions and poverty prevail in countries where these diseases are endemic.
