The objective of the study was to assess the susceptibility to infection by rabies virus of dogs in the district of Surquillo, prior to the execution of the national vaccination campaign. An observational cross-sectional and analytical study was designed, using the FAVN test as a laboratory method and a questionnaire to collect variables. Blood samples were collected from 141 dogs, that were at least3 months old, either male or female and were apparently healthy. They were classified into two groups: dogs that had not previously received rabies vaccination (30) and those that had a vaccination record (111). Of the total vaccinated dogs, 73.9% (82) exceeded the seroconversion limit, being protected according to the WHO (0.5UI / ml). Dogs that were one-year-old (p = 0.028) and those that had not received vaccination within the last three years (p = 0.05) were more receptive to the virus. In addition to the dogs vaccinated in the canine rabies vaccination campaign (p = 0.005), with monovalent vaccines (p = 0.005) within the last three years were the least receptive. With these results we can conclude that seroconversion was low, making the district vulnerable to face control of the spread of rabies virus entering the study area, especially in the population younger than one year of age and those who were not vaccinated within the previous 3 years: which can be considered as a criterion for selective vaccination in future rabies immunization campaigns.El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la susceptibilidad para la infección por el virus de la rabia de canes del distrito de Surquillo, previo a la campaña de vacunación antirrábica canina (Vancan). Se diseñó un estudio observacional de corte transversal, usando como método de laboratorio el test de FAVN y un cuestionario para recolectar las variables. Se colectó muestras sanguíneas de 141 canes > a 3 meses, de ambos sexos y aparentemente sanos. Se clasificaron en dos grupos: canes que no habían recibido vacunación antirrábica (30) y los que tenían registro de vacunación (111). Del total de canes vacunados el 73.9% (82) superaron el límite de seroconversión y estuvieron protegidos según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) (0.5UI/ml). Los canes menores de un año de edad (p=0.028) y los que no recibieron vacunación hace más de tres años (p=0.05) fueron más receptivos al virus. Los canes inmunizados en la campaña de vacunación antirrábica (p=0.005), con vacuna monovalente (p=0.005) en los tres últimos años de vacunación fueron los menos receptivos. Los resultados permiten concluir que la seroconversión fue baja, lo que hace al distrito vulnerable para afrontar un control de la diseminación del virus rábico de ingresar a la zona de estudio, especialmente en la población menor a un año de edad y aquellos que no fueron vacunados hace más de 3 años; lo que puede ser considerado como criterio para una vacunación selectiva en campañas antirrábicas futuras.
