The objective of the study was to describe the characteristics of the ownership of dogs with an owner in the district of Urubamba, Cusco. For this, an observational, descriptive and crosssectional research based on surveys was designed. The population under study were homes in the Urubamba district, divided into 4 sectors proportionally. The collection instrument contained demographic information on the dogs and their tenure. The study collected 292 surveys of people who lived predominantly in houses. The percentage of houses that had dogs was 88%. A majority percentage of the survival of the offspring was found, being mainly destined for gifts. Dogs are primarily pets and guardians. The sanitary practice of dogs includes vaccination against rabies. The average age of death of the last dog is 6 years, mainly due to accidents. The management of the stay indicates a majority of dogs living inside and outside the house. The feeding of the dog is mainly with mixed food. Male animals predominate, cross-breed is the vast majority and most of them are not sterilized or neutered. It is expected that the information obtained will be useful for the health and municipal authorities to plan and have a successful development of vaccination campaigns and responsible pet ownership.El objetivo del estudio fue describir las características de la tenencia de canes con dueño en el distrito de Urubamba, Cusco, el año 2020. Para ello se diseñó una investigación observacional, descriptiva y transversal, a base de encuestas. La población en estudio fueron viviendas del distrito de Urubamba, dividida en 4 sectores de manera proporcional. El instrumento de recolección contenía información demográfica de los canes y su tenencia. El estudio recolectó 292 encuestas de personas que vivían predominantemente en casas. El porcentaje de viviendas con canes fue del 88%. Los canes eran utilizados principalmente como mascotas y guardianes. La práctica sanitaria de los canes incluía la vacunación. La edad media de muerte del último can fue de 6 años, principalmente por causa de accidentes. La crianza de los animales se realizaba alternadamente dentro y fuera de la vivienda durante el día. La alimentación fue principalmente de tipo mixta (balanceado y casera). Predominaban animales de sexo macho, raza cruzada, y en su mayoría no se encontraban esterilizados o castrados. Se espera que la información obtenida sirva a las autoridades del sector salud y municipales para valorar la necesidad de un programa de tenencia responsable de canes en la región.
