El síndrome de intestino irritable (SII) es un trastorno crónico que se caracteriza por el dolor abdominal persistente y cambios en la frecuencia y forma de las heces. Varios estudios han reportado que los pacientes presentan alteraciones en la microbiota intestinal como una baja diversidad de especies, disminución de bacterias beneficiosas y un incremento de potenciales patógenos en el intestino. Por otro lado, los ensayos clínicos con prebióticos han mostrado incrementar bacterias benéficas, inhibir el crecimiento de patógenos y mejorar los síntomas de algunas enfermedades gastrointestinales. Por consiguiente, se investigó si los prebióticos pueden mejorar la sintomatología del SII mediante la modulación de la microbiota intestinal. En base a 3 revisiones sistemáticas y metaanálisis publicados entre el año 2000 y 2020, el uso de los prebióticos no es respaldado en el tratamiento del SII.Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder characterized by persistent abdominal pain and changes in the frequency and shape of stool. Several studies have reported that patients present alterations in the intestinal microbiota such as a low diversity of species, a decrease in beneficial bacteria and an increase in potential pathogens in the intestine. On the other hand, clinical trials with prebiotics have shown to increase beneficial bacteria, inhibit the growth of pathogens and improve the symptoms of some gastrointestinal diseases. Therefore, it was investigated whether prebiotics can improve the symptoms of IBS by modulating the gut microbiota. Based on 3 systematic reviews and meta-analyzes published between 2000 to the present, the use of prebiotics is not supported in the treatment of IBS.
