Antecedentes: La enfermedad del hígado graso no alcohólico (EHGNA) produce alta morbimortalidad. Su prevalencia mundial es del 25%. El estudio de su prevalencia en ALC es limitado, por lo que se requiere más evidencia en esta región. Objetivo: Estimar la prevalencia de EHGNA en la población adulta de ALC. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática en los buscadores OVID, Cochrane y LILACS, con términos relacionados a EHGNA y países de ALC. Se incluyeron estudios observacionales en adultos naturales y residentes de dicha región. Se empleó la definición de EHGNA utilizada en los estudios originales. Los artículos fueron examinados por dos revisores, quienes luego extrajeron los datos y evaluaron el riesgo de sesgo, las discrepancias se resolvieron por consenso o por un tercero. Resultados: Se analizaron 19 artículos (n=5625), cuyas prevalencias variaron entre 14,3 - 100%. En el subgrupo evaluado por ecografía abdominal fue de 14,3 – 73,3%, por biopsia hepática de 63 - 100%. En el subgrupo con Obesidad Mórbida fue de 62,9 – 98,4%, en el de Diabetes Mellitus II de 69,4 - 83,3% y en mujeres posmenopáusicas de 37,1% - 42,1%. La heterogeneidad entre los estudios fue alta o no fue estadísticamente significativa. Conclusiones: No pudimos determinar la prevalencia promedio de EHGNA en la población latinoamericana y sus subgrupos debido a la gran heterogeneidad y la escasez de estudios. Se requieren más estudios con definiciones homogéneas para cuantificar el impacto de la EHGNA en esta región.
Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) produces high morbidity and mortality. Its worldwide prevalence is 25%. The study of its prevalence in LAC is limited, so more evidence is required in this region. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of NAFLD in the adult population of LAC. Materials and methods: For this systematic review we collected data from OVID, Cochrane Library and LILACS search engines. We used terms related to NAFLD and LAC countries. We included observational studies in adults who were born and live in the region. Definitions of NAFLD from each study were accepted. Two reviewers evaluated the articles, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias, discrepancies were resolved by consensus or by a third reviewer. A validated tool was used to assess risk of bias. Results: We analyzed 19 articles (n=5625). The prevalence ranged from 14.3 to 100%. In the subgroup evaluated by abdominal ultrasound it was 14.3 - 73.3% and by liver biopsy, 63 - 100%. In Morbid Obesity patients it was 62.9 - 98.4%, in Diabetes Mellitus II patients it was 69.4 - 83.3% and in postmenopausal women it was 37.1% - 42.1%. The heterogeneity between the studies was high or statistically not significant. Conclusions: We couldn’t find the prevalence of NAFLD in the LAC population or its subgroups due to the great heterogeneity and the lack of studies. Studies with homogeneous definitions are required to quantify the impact of NAFLD in this region.
