Delphinidae es el clado de cetáceos vivientes más diverso con 37 especies, 16 de ellas habitantes del mar peruano. Presentan variaciones en la morfología rostral y en el tamaño corporal. Según datos moleculares hubo una diversificación inicial de Delphinidae hace aproximadamente 10 millones de años (Ma), y luego una radiación explosiva hace unos 2.18 Ma. La radiación adaptativa de Delphinidae ocurrió en intervalos temporales de grandes cambios ambientales que fueron determinantes en las características del actual Sistema de corrientes de Humboldt (SH). Sin embargo, aún se desconoce cuál fue la morfología y ecología de los Delphinidae del SH en el Plio-Pleistoceno. En este trabajo, se estudia a través de la morfometría geométrica un cráneo casi completo asignado al clado Delphinidae (MSUM 3906) y colectado en rocas de unos 2.7 en el área de Sacaco, Arequipa. Se comparó con especies actuales de odontocetos para explorar su tipo de dieta, estrategia de alimentación y hábitat. Los análisis indican que MUSM 3906 habría presentado una dieta piscívora y una estrategia de alimentación raptorial. La especie más cercana a MUSM 3906 en el espacio morfométrico fue Sotalia fluviatilis, un Delphininae actualmente ausente del SH y que habita la cuenca del Amazonas. Estos resultados indican que, si bien el SH del Plioceno ya incluía miembros de los Delphinidae, MUSM 3906 posiblemente representa un taxón y una ecomorfología ausente en el sistema moderno.
Delphinidae is the most diverse cetacean clade with 37 species, 16 of them inhabiting the Peruvian sea. They show disparity in the rostral morphology and size. According to molecular data there was an initial diversification in the Miocene, approximately 10 million years ago (Ma) and an explosive radiation at the end of the Pliocene, 2.18 Ma. The adaptive radiation of Delphinidae occurred during temporal intervals of great environmental changes that determined the characteristics of the current Humboldt’s System (HS). However, the morphology and ecology of the SH Delphinidae in the Plio-Pleistocene is still unknown. In this work, an almost complete skull assigned to the Delphinidae clade (MSUM 3906) and collected in rocks of about 2.7 in the area of Sacaco, Arequipa is studied through geometric morphometrics. It was compared with current species of odontocetes to explore their type of diet, feeding strategy and habitat. The analyzes indicate that MUSM 3906 would have presented a piscivorous diet and a raptorial feeding strategy. The closest species to MUSM 3906 in the morphometric space was Sotalia fluviatilis, a Delphininae currently absent from SH and inhabiting the Amazon basin. These results indicate that, although the Pliocene SH already included members of the Delphinidae, MUSM 3906 possibly represents a taxon and an ecomorphology absent in the modern system.
