El catéter venoso central de inserción periférica (PICC) ha mostrado ser eficiente para la administración de medicamentos y nutrición del paciente pediátrico. En consecuencia, es preciso revisar la producción científica sobre el tema, permitiendo al profesional de enfermería estar actualizado y capacitado para brindar cuidados al paciente pediátrico con indicaciones de PICC. Objetivo. Se planteó el objetivo de evaluar las principales características del uso del catéter venoso central de inserción periférica en cuidados intensivos pediátricos, con base en una revisión de evidencia científica actualizada. Metodología: se realizó una revisión documental en la BVS, Scopus, Scielo y Google académico con MeSH y DeCS en inglés y español combinados con operadores lógicos. De los 285 de la búsqueda inicial, se analizaron 29 artículos que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. Resultados: Aunque el PICC presenta complicaciones, las ha mostrado en menor cantidad que el catéter venoso central (CVC). La literatura recomienda que en los procedimientos para la inserción y mantenimiento del PICC, el personal se apoye en el ecógrafo. Se muestran los factores de riesgo y complicaciones, en los que destaca la infección y la TVP; esta última asociada al cáncer como factor de riesgo. Conclusiones: el profesional de enfermería debe contar con conocimiento y capacitación para llevar a cabo la inserción, mantenimiento y retiro del CVC de inserción periférica debido a los riesgos y complicaciones que incluyen la edad del paciente. Se sugieren investigaciones que tengan como unidad de estudio el profesional de enfermería.The peripherally inserted central venous catheter (PICC) has been shown to be efficient for the administration of medications and nutrition in pediatric patients. Consequently, it is necessary to review the scientific production on the subject, allowing the nursing professional to be updated and trained to provide care to pediatric patients with PICC indications. Target. The objective was to evaluate the main characteristics of the use of the peripherally inserted central venous catheter in pediatric intensive care, based on a review of updated scientific evidence. Methodology: a documentary review was carried out in the VHL, Scopus, Scielo and academic Google with MeSH and DeCS in English and Spanish combined with logical operators. Of the 285 of the initial search, 29 articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Results: Although the PICC presents complications, it has shown fewer complications than the central venous catheter (CVC). The literature recommends that in the procedures for the insertion and maintenance of the PICC, the staff rely on the ultrasound machine. Risk factors and complications are shown, in which infection and DVT stand out; the latter associated with cancer as a risk factor. Conclusions: the nursing professional must have the knowledge and training to carry out the insertion, maintenance and removal of the peripherally inserted CVC due to the risks and complications that include the patient's age. Research is suggested that has the nursing professional as the unit of study.
