Antecedentes: las fracturas del complejo cigomático son consideradas como la tercera fractura facial en frecuencia, detrás de las fracturas nasales y mandibulares. Su incidencia y etiología varían entre poblaciones, por lo que es imprescindible conocer su epidemiología para diseñar estrategias que faciliten su prevención y tratamiento. Objetivo: evaluar retrospectivamente las fracturas del complejo cigomático en el servicio de Cirugía Bucal y Maxilofacial del Hospital Militar Central, desde el 2010-2019. Materiales y métodos: se evaluaron retrospectivamente 63 historias clínicas de pacientes con diagnóstico de fractura de complejo cigomático atendidos en el servicio en mención, registrando en una ficha de recolección de datos la etiología, lado afectado, fracturas asociadas y método de tratamiento, además del sexo, edad y lugar de procedencia. Resultados: las fracturas del complejo cigomático solo se presentaron en pacientes masculinos, mayormente en el grupo 20-29 años (42,86%) y procedentes de Lima (58,73%). Además, la etiología más frecuente fueron los accidentes de tránsito (31,75%) y la violencia interpersonal (30,16%); el lado derecho fue ligeramente más afectado (50,79%); la mayoría de las fracturas fueron aisladas (55,55%) seguidas de las asociadas al hueso maxilar (17,46%) y a la mandíbula (14,29%); y la mayoría de las fracturas fueron tratadas con reducción abierta (84,13%). Conclusiones: la epidemiología de las fracturas del complejo cigomático es variada y propia del contexto sociodemográfico del país, por lo que esta información podría servir como base para la elaboración de estrategias de prevención y tratamiento de este trauma facial.Background: zygomatic complex fractures are considered the third most frequent facial fractures, after nasal and mandibular fractures. Its incidence and etiology vary between populations, so it is essential to know its epidemiology to design strategies that facilitate its prevention and treatment. Objective: evaluate retrospectively the fractures of the zygomatic complex in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Central Military Hospital, from 2010-2019. Materials and methods: Medical records of 63 patients with a diagnosis of zygomatic complex fracture treated in the mentioned service, during the period 2010 to 2019, were retrospectively analyzed considering in a data collection sheet the etiology, affected side, associated fractures and treatment method, as well as sex, age and place of origin. Results: the zygomatic complex fractures only occurred in male patients, mostly in the group 20-29 years (42.86%) and from Lima (58.73%). Furthermore, the most frequent etiology were traffic accidents (31.75%) and interpersonal violence (30.16%); the right side was slightly more affected (50.79%); most of the fractures were isolated (55.55%) followed by those associated with the maxillary bone (17.46%) and the mandible (14.29%); and most of the fractures were treated with open reduction (84.13%). Conclusions: The epidemiology of zygomatic complex fractures is varied and typical of the sociodemographic context of the country, so this information could serve as a basis for the development of prevention and treatment strategies for this facial trauma.
