Antecedentes: La enfermedad periodontal (EP) afecta a un buen sector de la población adulta; su progresión está ampliamente relacionada a factores de riesgo como la diabetes (DBT) e hipertensión arterial (HTA). Objetivo: Analizar la autopercepción de la salud periodontal en los discursos de pacientes adultos diagnosticados con EP y con algún factor de riesgo (DBT, HTA) que asisten al servicio de Periodoncia de La Clínica Dental Cayetano Heredia. Métodos y Materiales: El tipo de estudio de la presente investigación es cualitativa. Se trabajó con 8 pacientes con EP (4 participantes con DBT, 4 con HTA), a quienes se realizó entrevistas semiestructuradas que fueron grabadas y luego transcritas, posteriormente se codificaron y analizaron con el software Dedoose. Resultados: Tanto los pacientes con DBT e HTA, en su mayoría, presentaron desconocimientos conceptuales en torno a su enfermedad sistémica de riesgo y la EP, así como la asociación diabetes-EP o hipertensión-EP; experimentaron cambios adversos en su estilo de vida; tanto físicas como emocionales; pero percibieron mejorías con el tiempo debido al cambio en su estilo de vida. Periodontalmente, la mayoría de pacientes lidiaron con adversidades físicas, funcionales y psicológicas. Hubo buena percepción con sus periodoncistas, ademas existe interés por invertir en mejorar la salud buco periodontal. Conclusión: Hay una gran necesidad de incrementar los conocimientos sobre la salud periodontal, así como los factores de riesgo (DBT e HTA) y su asociación. Las expectativas bucoperiodontales son amplias, sobre todo en el género femenino.Background: Periodontal disease (PD) affects a good sector of the adult population; its progression is widely related to risk factors such as diabetes (DM) and arterial hypertension (HTN). Objective: To analyze the self-perception of periodontal health in the discourses of adult patients diagnosed with PD and with some risk factor (DM, HTN) who attend the periodontics service of Cayetano Heredia Dental Clinic. Methods and Materials: The type of study of the present investigation is qualitative. We worked with eight PD patients (four participants with DBT, four with HTN), who underwent semi-structured interviews that were recorded and later transcribed, later coded and analyzed with the Dedoose software. Results: Both patients with DM and HTN, mostly had conceptual ignorance about their systemic risk disease and PD, as well as the association between diabetes-PD or hypertension-PD; experienced adverse changes in their lifestyle; both physical and emotional; but they perceived improvements over time due to the change in their lifestyle. Periodontally, the majority of patients dealt with physical, functional and psychological adversities. There was a good perception with their periodontists, and there is also an interest in investing in improving oral periodontal health. Conclusion: The results reveal the great need to increase knowledge about periodontal health, as well as risk factors (DBT and HT) and their association. The bucco periodontal expectations are wide, especially in the female gender.
