Objetivo: El presenta estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la visibilidad del techo del canal mandibular en radiografías panorámicas y tomografías computarizadas de haz cónico y su relación con el ancho de las corticales óseas de pacientes atendidos en el Servicio de Radiología de la Universidad Cayetano Heredia. Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de tipo observacional, descriptivo, transversal y retrospectivo. Se observaron radiografías panorámicas y tomografías de haz cónico en pares, obteniendo así un total de 50 pares, en los que se estudió la visibilidad del canal mandibular y el ancho de las corticales. Resultados: La visibilidad del techo en radiografía panorámica fue mayor en la zona de la tercera molar de ambos lados con un 38%. El sector en el que menos casos se identificaron fue en la segunda premolar en ambos lados, asimismo el grupo de 40- 49 años presentó un mayor promedio del ancho de la tabla bucal de 4,5 mm en el sector del segundo premolar y el menor promedio de ancho de tabla bucal fue el grupo de 30-39 años con 2,3 mm. En el sector del segundo premolar hubo mayor número de casos donde no se observó el techo del canal mandibular y en las tomografías se observa promedios mayores del ancho de la cortical en el grupo donde no se observaba el canal mandibular, tendencia que se observó en todos los sectores con excepción del sector de la tercera molar. Conclusión: No existe relación entre la visualización del techo del canal mandibular y el ancho de las corticales ósea en tomografías computarizadas de haz cónico.Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the visibility of the roof of the mandibular canal in panoramic radiographs and cone beam computed tomography scans and its relationship with the width of the bone cortices of patients treated at the Radiology Service of the Cayetano Heredia University. Material and methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was conducted. Panoramic radiographs and cone beam computed tomography scans were observed in pairs, thus obtaining a total of 50 pairs, in which the visibility of the mandibular canal and the width of the cortices were studied. Results: The visibility of the roof in panoramic radiographs was greater in the area of the third molar on both sides with 38%. The sector in which fewer cases were identified was in the second premolar on both sides, likewise the group of 40-49 years old presented a greater average of the width of the buccal table of 4.5 mm in the sector of the second premolar and the lowest average of buccal table width was the group of 30-39 years old with 2.3 mm. In the sector of the second premolar there was a greater number of cases where the roof of the mandibular canal was not observed and in the CT scans greater averages of the width of the cortex were observed in the group where the mandibular canal was not observed, a tendency that was observed in all sectors with the exception of the sector of the third molar. Conclusion: There is no relationship between the visualization of the roof of the mandibular canal and the width of the bone cortices in cone beam computed tomography.
